My problem is I was in a level 2/3 split class, and I could not get my backbend kickover, but my coach moved me to level3 anyways. And I still have trouble with the backbend kickover…..

            I can do it easily,
You just need to practice anywhere you can.
I’m 11 and I had my parents spot me 3 times
Everyday and I would practice on my trampoline, couch, bed, or even my bean bag.
I found the easiest way to learn that is to have your feet higher up then your hands and have something soft you can fall on if you don’t get it. But kick up your feet of your higher surface and eventually you will get it done perfectly.

Yes, same! Back handspring is SO hard for me. I’m also a self-taught gymnast so I’ve never had a class. I also practice on my trampoline every day for the back and front handspring. I’ll get it eventually, and this is really helpful, thank you!

I can help you with this. Try practicing on a wall and crawl your hands down. Also something* that is very important is that when you are going back make sure you can see your hands and make sure you’re paying close attention to then. Another tip is that you so probably stretch your back first unless you are already flexible cause if you’re not flexible and you reach back than you might reach back to far and then more pressure will be on your heels and you want an equal amount of pressure on your foot. I hope this helps!

        • Ella June 15, 2021, 6:04 pm

No, a kick over is NOT a backbend. A backbend is where you bend back from standing into a bridge, also called a standing bridge. A kick over is when you are already in a bridge, when you kick one leg over the other first, and land standing up. I’ve never had a class and even I know this.

I was self taught until 8 years old. I learned temporarily skills like a cartwheel but, I failed and failed. Still I didn’t give up and I kept going so, now I am in a high level gymnastics class all because of my temporarily skills like, a front and back handspring, flips, jumps, and different cartwheels. So, even if you fail you can get back up and try again. Everyone has more than a second chance.

you should take tests on each level. coaches should know what level best fits you. i had that happen too. i was in xcel platinum and i switched to level 9. i was tested and they wanted me on their team! just whatever level they have you at, it is probably the best for you.

I am also 12, I am shy, and was scared to be with just little kids ( I didn’t want to be the oldest one at my level) but I was put with smaller kids , but I still love it! They are nice and funny and a good time. If you ever look at the older kids, do NOT compare them to you! A lot of people do this and end up sad (because they were the same age and weren’t as good as the higher levels) but a recommendation is be proud of them and when ever you see them doing all the big skills, just imagine you doing those skills! I’m sure you will love gymnastics no matter what(like me) it’s a good work out and can get hard at times but no matter what it’s a good time!!!!

It’s okay it’s takes time I started gymnastices when I was about 3/4 and now I’m 10 I’m a level 6 gymnast training 7 which IS so hard for a back bend try to get something soft and then try holding a bridge for about 30 seconds to a minute and it should help a little do that everyday for a week and do that around 10 times everyday. It should help you with backFlexibility and also when you try a back walk over this is just a little extra but if you try your back walk over try to lift 1 foot up and do it for a week and around 10 to 15 times a day and then try to kick over every time after you hold it for about 15-30 seconds

        your welcome for the help!!!!!!!!

a back bend kick over was a SUPER hard skill for me but what I did was do it on the wall and get lower and lower and then do it on a trampoline (if you don’t have one I would go to a friends house who has one or something) and do it then do it on the lowest thing you have and then try it on your own. it’s really hard at first but i recommend building your leg skills and splits which will help you kick over.

the level doesn’t mean the age, its the a skill level that you learn more things and it gets harder each level. For example, I’m 10 y/o (which this is true) and I’m in level 2. And you might get some girls same your age cuz I don’t have like any little 5 y/o in my xcel level.

Uh, actually, there are under levels for younger kids. You really only go into the actual competitive levels when you’re around 8-9-10. I was 9 when j went into level 1. I was 10 in level 2. Age doesn’t matter.

I am 12 years old almost 13 and I want to do competitive gymnastics, but the gym I need to go to doesn’t start until level two. Does this mean that I have to be able to do these skills or will they teach me? Also, I am worried that I will be put with the 2 and 3 year old, so will I be made fun of? Please help.

There is a 100% chance you won’t be put with 2 and 3 year olds, because the minimum age for Level 2 is 5. Average is 9.

You can be flexible at any age. If you are serious about becoming more flexible and excelling in your levels, stretch DAILY! It cannot be a once or twice a week option. Serious gymnasts with a competition focus are working on their flexibility and skills on some level every single day.

Try looking for tutorials on you tube and if you live in Canada maybe you might want watch Anna Mcnulty for a back handspring. Also try to believe in yourself my dad always told me this and I got many skills because everything comes from your brain. Even if that did not work for a pullover try to use all you strength that you have to go over and as time goes by don’t put a lot strength so you can connect skills.

Hello. I am a gymnast that is in a Trampoline and Rumble class. I quit my other class like 2-3 years ago and it was a class with bars, beam, floor (tumbling), and tramps. I am now 12 and I’m in intermediate of Trampoline and Tumble. That means I can do a back handspring. I can’t do it though. I can do it on the tramps, but sometimes I get scared and can’t do it and most of the time I stand there for like ever and I need tips. I tried some things on the bar and I can do my pullover, my friend is teaching me a straddle dismount on the bar, a pike dismount on the bar, and a normal dismount. I can almost do the straddle dismount and kind-a do a pike dismount. I have lost my cartwheel on the beam that I used to ALMOST have. Anyone have ideas on what you think I might need to do to get on team? If I don’t go to team I’ll go advance onto the Advanced Tramp and Tumble class and after that is either elite (if they have it) or Trampoline Team. I really want to do team not becuase I watch people at my gym. When I did that old class of mine it didn’t help me much. I regret going out of it now because I could’ve just added a class to my week, I’ve lost most of my moves and I’m sad when I watch good people that are on team. I need tips ASAP and I really wanna be on a level or a team of any sort,

Happy gymnast-First of all I would say to ask your coach. It’s important to know what their thoughts are As a coach my self, I would like for my gymnasts to ask me first and then we could come up with a plan Next I would say that if you can do all of the other skills for level 2 then a back hip should not be giving you that much trouble. Look up some good drills on Pinterest. There are lots. I’ve used Pinterest for great conditioning ideas Wnen you cast , make sure you are in a nice, flat shape. Next, when you lean back, pull the bar into your thighs but keep your eyes on your toes when you lean back. Last, when you go around the bar shifting your hands the whole time, your keeping your chin down and your eyes on your toes. When you finish, you should finish in front support nice and high on you thighs, with your feet in front and your eyes still looking at them. Hope this helps!!!

If you’re having trouble with your key covers then try by pushing your armpits back when you’re in your bridge try it with a spot and use a wall to help you to get over your fear keep on doing it with a spot till they keep on helping you less and less then soon go into a safe spot and try the skill nothing will happen even if your fault and if you still can’t do it that’s probably because your shoulders aren’t strong enough or your back isn’t flexible

Take your time and by the way get some stacked mats and master every single level then move down a little bit then try on that furniture till you get to the ground or you could try it with a spotter then ask them how much did they help you from one to 10 then let them spot you again then hopefully the number that you got is a lower than the first one and also make sure that your shoulders is strong and your back is flexible also push your armpits Back when you’re in the bridge and imagine that you’re kicking a ball with 1 foot and kick over as hard as he can remember perfect practice makes perfect

I struggle with the back handspring because I’m scared of going upside down yet I can do a front layout. I find in easy to do a front handspring tho.

Just keep practicing, try telling yourself that you did it on the floor and you can do it on the beam too.
