How to Do a Forward Roll in Gymnastics Step by Step

Step 1: Begin in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent and your arms extended straight out in front of you.

Step 2: Bend down forwards placing your hands on the ground in front of you.

Step 3: Tuck your chin to your chest to protect your neck during the roll. This will also help you maintain proper alignment.

Step 4: Bend your knees slightly more and reach forward with your hands. Your palms should face the floor, and your fingers should be pointing slightly outward. Tighten your abdominal muscles to support your spine as you start the roll. Push off of the ball of your feet to propel your body in a forward motion.

Step 5: **Here’s where a lot of people make a mistake** Don’t roll on the top of your head, roll on the back of your head. Keep your knees bent and your body in a rounded position throughout the roll. This will help you stay compact and controlled

Step 6: As you complete the roll, bring your feet underneath you and gently come to a seated position. Try to control the movement so you land softly on your feet. The incline of the mat makes the process easier to complete standing up without using your hands so your body can learn motion, which is called muscle memory.

Forward Roll Off of a Folded Panel Mat: Fold your panel mat in half. Start by kneeling on your panel mat. Place your hands on the floor in front of you and complete the forward roll. Finish by standing up without using your hands.

Forward Roll: Practice completing forward rolls. Make sure that your body stays tight so you can maintain the momentum to stand up without using your hands. Practice the forward roll regularly to build muscle memory and improve your technique.

Connected Forward Rolls: Complete forward rolls without fully standing up. Once you rotate fully so your feet are back on the ground, push forward off of the ball of your feet, keeping your body tucked in the tucked position and complete another immediate forward roll.
