Level 4 Gymnastics Requirements

These are the Level 4 gymnastics requirements; Level 4 is the fourth level in the USA gymnastics level structure.  Level 4 is a compulsory level so each gymnast competes the same, identical routine. These are the skills that make up the new compulsory routine. Level 4 is the first required competitive level. Refer to our article outlining the gymnastics levels for more information on how they work.

To compete in Level 4 gymnastics a gymnast must be able to do the following skills on each of the four events and have reached her 7th birthday prior to the first competition.

We’ve starred the skills that are generally the hardest for gymnasts to learn and most often prohibit a gymnast from moving on to Level 4 and you can also check out our how to do a switch leap.

  • If my daughter competed the old level 5 for two years scoring high enough to compete at state would she be allowed to compete the new level 4? I know it's an odd question but it's a long story.

    • She would be allowed to compete either the new level 4 or the new level 5 compulsory levels. The new level 4 would be essentially staying at the same level, so she would probably want to compete the new level 5.

    • Hi I’m nine and these are the tricks I can do. Roundoff, 30 cartwheels in a row, flip in the air, backbend kick over, walking handstand and some other little things like splits. What level would you say I’m on?

      • Hi Gymnastics lover
I am a level 6 gymnast. I would say you would be a level 1-2 or if you want to do xcel you would be a bronze

      • Hi I'm Emerson and im also 9 I can do a front handspring roundoff back handspring
full 1 leg turn on beab a handstand on the beam cartwheel 2/4 and off and front handspring dismount
for bar i can do a chinup pullover backhipcircle under swing straddle and can straddle jump from low to high on bar

  • I am a gymnast. I used to compete in the level 4 but not anymore since they changed it. Is there any way I can compete in just vault and floor?

        • How can I get my pullover, back handspring, front handspring, backbendkickover, and handstand flat back

          • Practice makes perfect! These all take a lot of practicing and hard work as well as conditioning to achieve the strength and flexibility needed to do these skills. Keep it up, you'll get there!

          • You could praptice back walkerovers back bend kickovers and keep going in fast maybe you could practice backwards rolls or your could keep practicing run in to round off then back bend kick over and keep practicing and keep going faster and faster keep practicing you got it

    • You can scratch on an event. Usually it’s because of injury, or to make a friend not as left out when they scratch(A scratch in gymnastics is when you're either not there, or you can’t compete in all events, so you present, touch or step onto the apparatus, get off, the present again.) Hope this clears some stuff up!

  • I really want to be a gymnast and I can do a lot of skills but what level are 12 year olds that have been in gymnastics since the age of like 2 usually compete in?

    • Hi, Im a 12 year old to. If you can do things like backhandsprings. I would say try for level 3 as for level four you need a kip which can be really challenging for some people.

      • Yeah kips are really hard. I competed level three, two years in a row trying to get my kip. Rn its almost comp. season and I am so close but still don't have it after 4 different private lessons!!! I really hope I get it soon or else back to level 3 for me. I have all of the other skills but my kip is killing me mentally and physically (my hands hurt so bad I have 9 rips on my hands.) Just proves you right on how frustrating and hard they can be.

  • Hi McKayla,

It really depends--there are gymnasts of all ages competing at pretty much every level. If you want to be a gymnast, I say go for it! Regardless of age.

  • I wanna do gymnastics im 15 and i can a back bend and then i can kick over then i can touch my foot to my head and i can do cart wheels and and round off

    • So you can join any club! you will still have a high potential whatever the age. If you practice and practice in your free time you will soon pick up more skills which will help you to compete. The problem is I had this when I was younger, gymnasts who start only being capable of doing floor skills will tend to struggle with alarators but I'm sure if you try your hardest you will make progress to be the head of the game

      • Hi so im 12 and in level 3 (don't judge). Im about to be in level 4 however I would say level 1 as level 3 has backhandsprings, level 2 has back hip circles and stuff like that, so definitely level 1.

  • Hey I was a gymnast when I was four but decided to quit I came back when I was nine I was a level two gymnast it's been a year I am ten years old and I can do a backhandspring, round off back hand spring, a front walk over, back walk over, front hand spring, splits, handstand ,and other things

    • You should ask your coaches after the last meet of the season if they can help you try to reach the level 4 skills

  • Hey I was a gymnast when I was four but decided to quit I came back when I was nine I was a level two gymnast it's been a year I am ten years old and I can do a backhandspring, round off back hand spring, a front walk over, back walk over, front hand spring, splits, handstand ,and other things I just need to know what level I am so I can see if I need to tryout for usag in spring please respond

    • Your probably a level 3, and you could probably compete level 3 if you get the bars valt and beam skills and it already looks like you have all the floor skills

  • I have always wanted to be a gymnast. I could be a level 6, floor, if I back tuck my back extension roll. I have never been professionally trained and I am 15. What should I do this point?

  • I can do some but not all of these I took an online quiz because we dont have levels at my gym that said i was level 6 or 7 but i cannot even do all the level 4 requirements?! Im on a floor and vault squad by the way.

      • Don't trust quizzes. If you can do all the requirements for passing out of level 1, you're a level 2. If you can do that PLUS the requirements for passing out of level 2, you're a level 3. If you can do the requirements for passing out of level 3, you're a level 4 and so on and so forth.

But since you live in the UK, look up the UK requirements and do the same thing. Listed above and on this website are USAG requirements

  • I did gymnastics for 4 years but my teacher quit when I was 8 so I stopped, I'm at a level 5 floor but haven't done anything else, I can't take lessons cause I cannot afford them what should i do?

    • Hi Briana,
I would say keep practicing at home! Doing conditioning and practicing the basics (like handstands) will help you improve. And maybe the high school you will go to will have a gymnastics team which would probably be free or at a low cost :)
