Xcel Silver Requirements

The Xcel Silver division is the second level in the Xcel Program. To compete gymnastics in the Xcel Silver Division, the gymnast must be able to do routines that meet these requirements,
as stated in the Xcel Code of Points. These requirements are paraphrased for easier comprehension; for precise information always refer to the official book published by USA Gymnastics.

The Xcel Silver division is one level in the Xcel program; here is more information about all the gymnastics levels.

While these are requirements, some gymnasts compete in the Xcel Silver level without being able to do all the skills listed below. For what requirements gymnasts don’t fullfill, the judges take deductions.

Silver Vault Requirement

Silver gymnasts must perform one of the following 2 vaults:

  • Handspring over Mat Stack
  • 1/4 to 1/2 on, to land on feet facing mat stack

Silver Bars Requirements

Silver gymnasts must have the following in their bar routine:

  1. A minimum of 5 “A” value skills
  2. A Cast min 45° below horizontal
  3. A Circling Skill (not the mount or dismount)
  4. A Dismount

Silver Beam Requirements

Silver gymnasts must have the following in their beam routine:

  1. Minimum of 1/2 turn on one foot
  2. One jump or leap that reaches a 90 degree angle (ex. straddle jump)
  3. One non-flight acro skill (ex. cartwheel)
  4. A dismount (ex. roundoff off the beam)

Silver Floor Requirements

Silver gymnasts must have the following in their floor routine:

  1. Minimum of two directly connected acro skills, one must have flight (ex. roundoff – back handspring)
  2. Either a 2nd pass of 2 directly connected acro skills (no flight required) or 1 acro with flight (ex. roundoff backward roll or a front handspring)
  3. A dance passage with two skills, one of which is a leap with a 90 degree cross or side split — they can be directly or indirectly connected
  4. Minimum of 360 degree turn on one foot

  • It's not fair I wanna sign up but cant because I don't know a few skills I'm in a high quaility class will y'all still accept me!? For who I am? I was self taught since I was 4 and starting from 2 months ago I've been doing gymnastics

      • Well technically you can you have to have the right skills and strength to be able to but you can sign up for xcel

      • Yup your right I’m in xel silver and you do need a lot of strength to do it and when u start team gymnastics you will be in bronze.

        • OK so I don’t have a back handspring or any flight skills on floor like backhand spring or front handspring nothing like that but I have everything else and I need to get my mill circle which I’m really really close to and I want to sign up but the bronze team has all little kids and I want to join silver because I know almost everybody there so would I be able to skip bronze if it’s not during competition season

          • I actually don't have my back handspring or front handspring - I skipped bronze and went to silver. In my team, if you can do a back handspring, you do a roundoff, rebound, and backward roll to the push-up position. However if it's during competition season, you will probably not be able to sign up. I hope you make it! xx <3

          • Sorry, but that’s not exactly how it works. First of all you can’t just sing up you have to make the team and they can’t put you on silver cause that’s where all of your friends are. Ur going to have to show your coach that you’re ready for team.

      • liten up bubble unicorn dont judge a book by its cover she might not be able to sign u for xcel and thats ok she is who she is you have to read a few pages of her before you judge and dont judge in general and yes you do need a lot of streth just keep praticing conitioning

        • Hey Mad at Bubble Unicorn! Maybe @Bubbleunicorn wasn't the nicest to her, but you need to chill out! Bubble Unicorn has a point! I'm in Silver too and last year, I didn't get accepted into Silver because I didn't have enough strength. But do you know what I didn't do? I didn't gloat. I got off my butt and got stronger and stronger until I am where I am now. And for Jediah Miller, don't let that stop you. Just keep on getting stronger and stronger until they absolutely have to invite you to sign up. :)

          • Hey! I am also on silver and I have my next meet on sunday! I am a total floor champ I always get 9.65 on floor or once I got a 9.75

        • I understand you trying to be kind but honestly bubble unicorn is right it is not all fun and games

          • I skipped bronze and silver went right to gold you can sign up but you may have a hard time getting in the team but it's better to get invited

        • At my gym you can’t just sign up, you have to be at the gym for at least 1 month and have to be invited or do tryouts

        • I actually took a break for 2 years and lost basically all my skill:( But I was practicing at home like, conditioning and stretching and now I am as good as new so I called a gymnastics gym and now they are going to see where i am (basically an assessment)!!
So you can't just sign up you have to try out :(

    • yes! in my gym for tryouts you don’t need all the skills you can work on them once you get on team

    • Hey! So you would need to try out for the team, and have the proper skills, for example you need to at least have enough skills to be able to work up to the right skills before meet season!

    • You can't just sign up- you have to have strength and actual skills to be able to compete on an Xcel or J.O. team. It's not about who you are, but about the skills you possess.

    • Well, the gymnastics I go too, we have tryouts every summer. You can’t just join in the middle of the year due to competition season.

    • U can’t just sign up for competition teams u have to get invited I got invited to xcel gold

    • I’m in silver and you don’t necessarily need to know how to do every single skill I can’t do a back-handspring and I’m still in silver but I haven’t gone up for 2 years so you can. But also you can’t just sign up to silver you have to tryout in most gyms.

  • I would like my daughter to compete but she just started gymnastics at bronze level at 13 and is 5 ft 7. The bronze level is more like a recreational class and you learn different skills. Is there anyway she can get on the road to competing? If so, at what level does she start to compete since bronze doesn't compete?

    • Some gyms do compete bronze, so it really depends on your gym at what level they start competing.

      • i competed for xcel bronze for 6 months and im going to do a evouation for xcel silver because i got gold medals on all of my meets

      • Most gyms have a high school program. You can be any level and you have the option to compete. You don’t need to try out or anything just sign up. To be a competitive gymnast you had to start really early or practice a lot. High school gymnastics is the closest thing to competitive gymnastics

    • I would say that if she can get all her silver skills then she can compete silver. I started out in silver. There is also preteam, (at least at my gym) and there is level 3. Preteam is just like level three but they don't get scores at competition. So I would recommend starting either in level three or xcel silver.

    • Bronze do compete my team competed last month and I'm competing in September and I'm in bronze. I know I'm VERY late on answering this but yea.

  • Are there deductions for doing too many "gold" skills in a routine. Our coach said she she can do a round off back tuck and a front hand spring in the same routine

    • There are restrictions for the difficulty of skills that can be done in Silver routines. On floor you are only allowed to do 1 salto or aerial per routine. A back tuck would count in this category, a front handspring wouldn't. The coach could also be concerned about doing too many difficult things and making errors on them which would result in deductions, when an easier skill could be done error free. Hope that helps.

  • Is a round off bhs back tuck too advanced for silver? Also, can you move up a level during competition season? I really need an answer!

    • You could do a roundoff bhs back tuck in silver, although most gymnasts wait until Gold. And yes you can move up a level during competition season, although gyms rarely do this.

    • nope I have that tumbling pass, also note that you might get more deductions. You can move up a level in the beginning of competition season.

  • My daughter just got her summer recommendation and it is silver/ bronze, what exactly does that mean and Will she ever be able to do regular levels?

    • Hi Traci,

You can read more about the Xcel program here-- https://gymnasticshq.com/gymnastics-xcel-levels/ but yes she will be able to do the regular "JO" levels again. The Xcel program is a different option than the the JO levels, but it can be a more fun option since they get their own routines, as opposed to having to learn compulsory routines.

      Hope that helps!

  • I was wondering if you could do a front tuck in silver. The other acro/tumbling skills in my routine are a front walkover, a cartwheel roundoff and a roundoff, which I would like to change to my front tuck. I've been having extreme mental blocks on back skills after having a hard fall on my neck:) Thanks!!

    • Yes, you can do a front tuck in silver. Do not be scared! have confidence and work through it with your coaches!

  • My daughter was in bronze last year, and she is supposed to be in silver this year. She has all of the skills in the silver level and does them with very good form (I know that because I was a gymnast when I was a little girl). She also has some of the required gold skills. Can she skip the silver level, train for gold, and maybe even compete gold if she gets all the required skills? Please reply.

    • Hi Autumn, I believe she might be able to skip silver, but if she can I still don't think it's wise for her to do that. I did two years of sliver and now I am going to gold, which payed off. I got much better scores and placed a lot better in my second year. If she has good form right now in silver, I would keep her in silver for one year just to do better and learn right techniques. Then after that she could move to gold. She can go to gold if she really wants, but I would advise staying in silver.

  • Hi my friend is in the silver level and I want to be in it I've never done gymnastics before except for when I was younger but I wasn't very goo I was wondering if I could start gymnastics at the silver

    • If you would like to be in silver, I would start with the recreational classes first. They are much less demanding and cost way less money. Once you got better and go all your skills for silver, you could go to xcel bronze if they have that at your friend's gym. And I would advise you to go to an actual gym, if you want to compete and learn the right technique for everything.

  • I don't have a gym in mind to compete at but I was thinking I could think I can compete in my dad's basement he has a weightlifting room but my dad hates it when I use it because one day I must drop to 1 pound weight on my foot and I am most died LOL I bet I would be the strongest person on the team. My friend thinks I'll fail but I'm gonna prove her wrong

  • Hi, my daughter is 7 and has been in gymnastics for about a year and a half now. She stared out with rec classes and quickly progressed, skipped a level or two and joined the pre-team practices.

She practiced with pre-team for about 5 months and started team practice at the begging of summer in June.

They have recently placed her in a "Silver Plus" group which meets 3 days a week, 4 hours per day. Silvers are 3 days, 3 hrs/week.

Silver plus is not an actual level in gymnastics is it? And would anyone know what the purpose of having this separate class would be? Just asking as I am paying by hours per week and just wondering what the point of this class is or what it is leading to.

    • If your daughter hasn’t competed before the only level she can start with is bronze or silver due to the xcel entry rules. Most likely they feel that she will do well and move up to Gold next year and silver plus is probably to start working on some of those skills for the next level.
