How to Prepare for a Gymnastics Meet

Weeks Leading up to Meet

Practice, Practice, Practice

Preparation for a meet begins long before competition day. Here’s how to make the most of your training:

  • Focus on the Details: During practice, pay attention to small details in your routines—pointed toes, straight legs, and tight landings. These little things can make a big difference in your scores.
  • Simulate Meet Conditions: Try doing your full routines under “meet conditions” at practice. Wear your leotard, have teammates or coaches “judge” you, and go through your routines as if you’re at the meet. This will help you feel more comfortable on meet day.
  • Work on Your Mental Game: Visualization is a powerful tool in gymnastics. Practice visualizing yourself doing each routine. This helps build confidence and reduces nerves on the big day.

Days Leading up to Meet

Rest and Fuel Up

Your body needs to be in top shape for meet day, so take care of yourself in the days leading up to the competition:

  • Get Plenty of Sleep: Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before your meet. A well-rested body will perform better, and you’ll feel more focused and energized.
  • Eat Right: The day before the meet, focus on eating nutritious, balanced meals that include proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. Avoid junk food or heavy, greasy meals that could make you feel sluggish. Learn more about nutrition for gymnasts here.
  • Hydrate: Staying hydrated is key to performing at your best. Start drinking plenty of water the day before the meet and continue sipping water throughout meet day.

Practice your Meet Hairstlye

You should do a practice run of your meet hairstyle (especially if you’ve never done the particular style before). Make sure you have all of your supplies – hair gel, bobby pins, hair spray, hair ties, etc.

Some meet styles that are classics include:

  • The classic sleek bun
  • Space buns
  • Ponytail with curls
  • Dutch french braids

Pack your Gym Bag the Night Before

Here’s what we recommend having in your gym bag:

Figure Out what time you should get there. Make sure you allow plenty of time for parking since often times you may have to walk to get to the arena or convention center. There may be extra traffic due to other events in the area or even just from the actual meet. Don’t forget that there could be lines to enter the meet, too. You also want to make sure all of this extra time is prior to the time your coach told you to be there so that you don’t miss open stretch!

Morning of Meet

Meet mornings can feel hectic, so having a plan in place helps everything go smoothly:

  • Wake Up Early: Give yourself plenty of time to wake up, eat breakfast, and get ready without feeling rushed.
  • Do your Competition Hair & Makeup: You’ll want to do your competition hair, of course – still make sure you pack extra hair supplies in your bag in case you need to make any last minute corrections! If you wear makeup, it’s good to do this prior to the meet as well.
  • Eat a Balanced Breakfast: Your meet day breakfast should include complex carbs and protein. Great options include oatmeal with fruit, scrambled eggs on toast, or a smoothie packed with fruits and vegetables.
  • Double-Check Your Bag: Before leaving the house, take a few minutes to go over your bag and make sure you haven’t forgotten anything important.

Some gymnasts prefer to arrive in their competition leo and others like to pack it, especially if it’s a longer ride to the meet and you aren’t staying overnight if it’s out of town. You’ll need to make sure you get dressed and no undergarments are showing outside of your leotard. Just make sure that prior to open stretch, you are fully dressed in your competition leotard and your warmup suit!

Arrive Early and Warm Up

Getting to the meet early helps you settle in, get mentally prepared, and make sure you’re ready for warm-ups:

  • Arrive 30-45 Minutes Early: Getting to the venue early gives you time to check in, get familiar with the space, and start warming up.
  • Stretch and Stay Loose: Once you’ve checked in, spend time warming up. Focus on dynamic stretches to keep your muscles loose and ready for competition.
  • Go Over Your Routines Mentally: Take a few minutes to visualize your routines, imagining yourself performing each skill with precision and confidence.

Stay Positive and Focused During the Meet

On meet day, it’s easy to feel nervous, but staying positive and focused will help you give your best performance:

  • Breathe and Relax: If you feel nervous, take a few deep breaths to calm yourself. Remember that everyone gets nervous—it’s normal! Focus on the routines you’ve worked so hard on and trust your training.
  • Stay Focused on Yourself: Avoid comparing yourself to other gymnasts. Focus on your own performance, and try not to worry about what others are doing.
  • Take It One Event at a Time: Don’t get overwhelmed thinking about the entire meet. Focus on one event at a time and give your best effort in the moment.

What to Do After Each Event

How you handle your time between events can impact your overall performance. Stay positive and ready for your next routine:

  • Shake It Off: If something doesn’t go perfectly, shake it off and move on. Gymnastics meets are long, and there’s always another chance to do better in the next event.
  • Hydrate and Refuel: Drink water and grab a healthy snack between events to keep your energy up.

Celebrate Your Successes

After the meet, take a moment to celebrate your accomplishments:

  • Reflect on the Positive: Whether or not you got the scores you wanted, celebrate the things you did well and the progress you’ve made.
  • Learn from Mistakes: If something didn’t go as planned, use it as a learning opportunity for the next meet.
  • Celebrate with Your Team: Meets are a great time to bond with your teammates and celebrate everyone’s hard work!

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a gymnastics meet is all about planning ahead, practicing your routines, and staying positive. With the right preparation, you’ll feel confident and ready to shine on competition day. Remember, gymnastics meets are about more than just scores—they’re a chance to show off your skills, have fun, and celebrate how far you’ve come!
