Xcel silver gymnastics requirements

The Xcel Silver division is the second level in the Xcel Program. To compete gymnastics in the Xcel Silver Division, the gymnast must be able to do routines that meet these requirements,
as stated in the Xcel Code of Points. These requirements are paraphrased for easier comprehension; for precise information always refer to the official book published by USA Gymnastics.

The Xcel Silver division is one level in the Xcel program; here is more information about all the gymnastics levels.

While these are requirements, some gymnasts compete in the Xcel Silver level without being able to do all the skills listed below. For what requirements gymnasts don’t fullfill, the judges take deductions.

OK so I don’t have a back handspring or any flight skills on floor like backhand spring or front handspring nothing like that but I have everything else and I need to get my mill circle which I’m really really close to and I want to sign up but the bronze team has all little kids and I want to join silver because I know almost everybody there so would I be able to skip bronze if it’s not during competition season

I actually don’t have my back handspring or front handspring – I skipped bronze and went to silver. In my team, if you can do a back handspring, you do a roundoff, rebound, and backward roll to the push-up position. However if it’s during competition season, you will probably not be able to sign up. I hope you make it! xx <3

Sorry, but that’s not exactly how it works. First of all you can’t just sing up you have to make the team and they can’t put you on silver cause that’s where all of your friends are. Ur going to have to show your coach that you’re ready for team.

Hey Mad at Bubble Unicorn! Maybe @Bubbleunicorn wasn’t the nicest to her, but you need to chill out! Bubble Unicorn has a point! I’m in Silver too and last year, I didn’t get accepted into Silver because I didn’t have enough strength. But do you know what I didn’t do? I didn’t gloat. I got off my butt and got stronger and stronger until I am where I am now. And for Jediah Miller, don’t let that stop you. Just keep on getting stronger and stronger until they absolutely have to invite you to sign up. 🙂

I’m in silver and you don’t necessarily need to know how to do every single skill I can’t do a back-handspring and I’m still in silver but I haven’t gone up for 2 years so you can. But also you can’t just sign up to silver you have to tryout in most gyms.

I would like my daughter to compete but she just started gymnastics at bronze level at 13 and is 5 ft 7. The bronze level is more like a recreational class and you learn different skills. Is there anyway she can get on the road to competing? If so, at what level does she start to compete since bronze doesn’t compete?

Some gyms do compete bronze, so it really depends on your gym at what level they start competing.

Most gyms have a high school program. You can be any level and you have the option to compete. You don’t need to try out or anything just sign up. To be a competitive gymnast you had to start really early or practice a lot. High school gymnastics is the closest thing to competitive gymnastics

I would say that if she can get all her silver skills then she can compete silver. I started out in silver. There is also preteam, (at least at my gym) and there is level 3. Preteam is just like level three but they don’t get scores at competition. So I would recommend starting either in level three or xcel silver.

Are there deductions for doing too many “gold” skills in a routine. Our coach said she she can do a round off back tuck and a front hand spring in the same routine

    Reply
    • gymnasticshq January 31, 2017, 2:37 pm

There are restrictions for the difficulty of skills that can be done in Silver routines. On floor you are only allowed to do 1 salto or aerial per routine. A back tuck would count in this category, a front handspring wouldn’t. The coach could also be concerned about doing too many difficult things and making errors on them which would result in deductions, when an easier skill could be done error free. Hope that helps.

You could do a roundoff bhs back tuck in silver, although most gymnasts wait until Gold. And yes you can move up a level during competition season, although gyms rarely do this.

      Hi Traci,

You can read more about the Xcel program here– https://gymnasticshq.com/gymnastics-xcel-levels/ but yes she will be able to do the regular “JO” levels again. The Xcel program is a different option than the the JO levels, but it can be a more fun option since they get their own routines, as opposed to having to learn compulsory routines.

      Hope that helps!

I was wondering if you could do a front tuck in silver. The other acro/tumbling skills in my routine are a front walkover, a cartwheel roundoff and a roundoff, which I would like to change to my front tuck. I’ve been having extreme mental blocks on back skills after having a hard fall on my neck:) Thanks!!

My daughter was in bronze last year, and she is supposed to be in silver this year. She has all of the skills in the silver level and does them with very good form (I know that because I was a gymnast when I was a little girl). She also has some of the required gold skills. Can she skip the silver level, train for gold, and maybe even compete gold if she gets all the required skills? Please reply.

Hi Autumn, I believe she might be able to skip silver, but if she can I still don’t think it’s wise for her to do that. I did two years of sliver and now I am going to gold, which payed off. I got much better scores and placed a lot better in my second year. If she has good form right now in silver, I would keep her in silver for one year just to do better and learn right techniques. Then after that she could move to gold. She can go to gold if she really wants, but I would advise staying in silver.

    • Ali July 30, 2017, 11:04 pm

If you would like to be in silver, I would start with the recreational classes first. They are much less demanding and cost way less money. Once you got better and go all your skills for silver, you could go to xcel bronze if they have that at your friend’s gym. And I would advise you to go to an actual gym, if you want to compete and learn the right technique for everything.

Hi, my daughter is 7 and has been in gymnastics for about a year and a half now. She stared out with rec classes and quickly progressed, skipped a level or two and joined the pre-team practices.

She practiced with pre-team for about 5 months and started team practice at the begging of summer in June.

They have recently placed her in a “Silver Plus” group which meets 3 days a week, 4 hours per day. Silvers are 3 days, 3 hrs/week.

Silver plus is not an actual level in gymnastics is it? And would anyone know what the purpose of having this separate class would be? Just asking as I am paying by hours per week and just wondering what the point of this class is or what it is leading to.

    Reply
    • Jill October 23, 2017, 9:39 am

If your daughter hasn’t competed before the only level she can start with is bronze or silver due to the xcel entry rules. Most likely they feel that she will do well and move up to Gold next year and silver plus is probably to start working on some of those skills for the next level.

It all kind of be depends on what skills you have! Platinum is a very high level so you would be past level 4. If level 4 is what you want to do yes you can go straight into level 4 but if you want to be in a higher level and you have the right skills then you can skip over level 4

My daughter has been taking classes for 3 years at a gym that does not join competitions, but their classes are modeled after JO levels. She has completed that gym’s level 3 class now, but wants to move on to competitions. So she’s tried out for 2 gyms. One has placed her on their JO Level 2 team for the summer to shore up a few details of that level with a plan to move her to Level 3 in the fall (or maybe after she does one competition in level 2 since she hasn’t ever competed before). So basically, she’s considered mostly Level 3 with a bit of transition needed through Level 2 first. The other gym has placed her on their Xcel Silver team. However, she wants to do compulsory and wants to move up through that model of competition. Both gyms do both Xcel and JO. Is it fair to ask the 2nd gym if she can do JO instead of Xcel? Is it just a preference on the part of the gymnast? If Silver and JO 3 are similar levels in skill set (is that correct?), then can gymnasts decide for themselves which they want to do? Or should a gymnast whose never done competitions before do Xcel for at least a year and then switch to JO? We’re sort of confused on the differences between JO 3 and Xcel Silver – and maybe there isn’t a difference except for the model of competition (compulsory vs optional). Some gyms (like the first gym my daughter tried out for) consider Xcel lesser (even if the skill set is the same) which has had some influence on my daughter’s preferences. So we’re not sure which way to go. Any insight you have that will us decide? Thanks.

    • KJ August 11, 2020, 8:56 am

If the first gym recommended JO and the second Xcel, and your daughter wants to compete in JO, then I say pick the first gym! Level 3 and Silver are similar skill-wise, so you could pick either one! Keep in mind that JO is more time-consuming and expensive, but your daughter could eventually become an Elite or college gymnast, while Xcel isn’t as demanding but doesn’t give the gymnast as many opportunities for big meets/national-level competition. I would say if your daughter wants to do JO, then she should do that right away, don’t bother with a year of Xcel first, as they’re very different programs. I wouldn’t consider Xcel worse, gymnasts can do all the same skills as JO gymnasts and with great form, but it is a more fun program because the gymnasts get their own routines. It was made for girls who still want to compete, but don’t exactly fit the mold of JO (maybe they’re a little bit older, or they get mental blocks a lot so it’s hard for them to learn the required skills). If your daughter is 10+, she will probably be the oldest girl in her Level 3, while she would be around the same age as most of the Xcel Silver girls. Sorry I’m so late, just wanted to help anyone else with similar problems since I’m assuming you already chose a gym.

Hi, I have a question. I am in AAU Silver, which has the same requirements as XCEL Silver. My coach is not sure about this. Can you do a handstand twist off in Silver for your beam dismount? My coach says she thinks that is a “b” skill, and it’s too advanced for Silver but she’s not entirely sure. Do you know if you can do it?

    • GC August 6, 2018, 1:34 pm

Yes, you can. My coach is letting us do either the handstand twist or the cartwheel to handstand dismount, depending on which we are better at.

Is there a new Silver Vault for 2018? I see in the checklist the Vault skill is still listed as “handspring onto vault table with repulsion to flat back landing on stacked mats”, but I’m seeing information on websites that a new Silver Vault has been changed to:
    Handspring over mat stack sideways
1/4-1/2 on, repulsion off to land facing mat stack

Any updates are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just checked above and it looks like you’ve updated the silver vault. 2 follow ups.
      1. Can you still do the old vault – handspring onto vault table with repulsion to flat back on stacked mats?
      2. Can someone explain the “1/4-1/2 on, repulsion off to landing facing mat stack?” Is it like a round off?

      Reply
      • GC September 9, 2018, 5:14 pm

No you cannot still do the old vault, as far as I know. You have to do either a front handspring or a roundoff over a sideways mat stack. And yes, the “1/4-1/2 on” is just a round off. But it is not like the round-offs over the vault table, it is a little bit easier. On the vault table you have to turn your hands all the way around on the table, and then land.

            Here are two options.
            1. Front handspring vault. Look up the video: “Front handspring vault drill over 8″ mats” By Zari Goldman. The video shows it mostly the same except in Silver the mats are turned sideways.

            2. Roundoff vault. Look up the video: “Half Over/ Round-Off Vault GCSE” By Shona Mackie. It is basically this except over stacked sideways 8-inchers. But you can get the basic skill and shape from this video.

Yes, I am a silver and the vault that we are doing is the handspring over a mat sideways.

Are you allowed to do double back handsprings and aerials in silver competitions? It’s my daughters first competition so she has to start in silver but really wants to do those things ?

    • Keara December 3, 2018, 12:43 pm

Yes you can do those skills. At this point if she has a kip, squat on, cartwheel on beam and a front handspring on vault she can easily move to Gold. She is basically a Gold on floor at this point

This year I competed as Xcel silver, even though I could do most of these skills. I got great scores, and improved a lot on my form. You should ask your coach about what to do and see what he/she thinks. If you compete as silver, you’ll score higher, be comfortable with every skill, and improve your form. If you compete Gold, you’ll probably be doing the easier requirements and receiving lower scores, but still have fun. You might have to repeat Gold again too. Just do whatever your coach thinks!

A skills are the easiest skills you can do in comps. It’s basically stuff like cartwheels and split leaps and backward rolls on floor. For bars I would say pull overs, backhip circles, and 45° casts. Beam would probably be split leaps and handstands. And I don’t know exactly what for vault, I hope this helps!

The letter value skills are only for bars beam and floor not for vault.

I think there are different ways to meet the requirements other than a roundoff-back handspring, so you could try that. You could also just compete Silver without a full start value on that routine and just do a roundoff. You could also work on your roundoff-back handspring over the summer and maybe be able to compete it by fall, when meet season starts. Talk to your coach and see what they think. (Also, sorry, I know it’s past May.)

I am 10 years old and about a xcel silver. the thing is i could be probaly gold but ive been self taught for a while and never got the time to learn the bar skills for bronze or silver. Does this matter? Or can i just learn it in the xcel silver team classes? I have done recrational gymnastics but the i know i am a WAY higher level. I can do a roundoff backhandspring and a cartweheel on beam but only can do a pullover on bars. So they wont put me on team bacause of this… Please reply if u know….

Hi Anika it does in a way matter because in silver you need to be able to reach the high bar so you would need a cast to a squat on to get up or just step up and you need to have more than 1 circling skill such as a back hip circle

      Reply
  • anika April 29, 2020, 2:45 pm

you probaly need a backhandsping.. Its very important in silver gymnastics… But in your gym you can have someone have a priavate class with you to learn the backhandsping. All though in the floor rountine it DOES NOT have to have the roundoff backhandsping, but most gyms want you to have a roundoff backhandspring. You can go to your gym and ask them if you could tryout for xcel silver.

If you need two of the good skills you could always just learn them before competition, but it’s a bit late for that and you might have to scratch an event or lower your start value if you do compete gold. I recommend silver if you have all of the right skills because you will score higher with the easier skills and maybe even compete regionals. Silver is also a bit less stressful, and the judges will go easier on you then they would if you were a gold. Still, if you are looking for more of a challenge and think you will have more fun then you should do gold. It really depends on whether or not you want a challenge and what results you want from your competitions. I’m sorry this is a bit late but I hope i helped you with your decision. Whatever level you chose, don’t forget to have fun!

Hey so no, you would not get a deduction for a kip in silver. This is more advanced for a silver routine but you can still fo it.

      Minimum bar routine:
      • pullover
      •back hip circle
      • soul circle, jump up, or 3 casts and jump down dismount

Hi, I am in excel silver and was wondering if I would be able to move up to gold. The only skills that I don’t have to move up are a kip and a cartwheel on beam. Do you think I could still go up then learn the skills when I get there.

Hey! I was just wondering if you can do an aerial as your second pass after a back handspring in Xcel silver? I would rather do a roundoff-back handspring and an aerial instead of a roundoff-back handspring and a plain old round-off because that’s so boring. I have my aerial perfect on floor and was wondering if I could do it. Thanks!

You can’t sign up form a gymnastics team even for excel gymnastics. You have to make the team . Also you can only be on the level that ur actually good enough for. If you aren’t good enough you’ll have to work hard. I’m an excel gold now and I also skipped bronze but only cause I was a good enough gymnast. You still have to pay for gymnastics team but you can’t sign up.
