Xcel Bronze Gymnastics Requirements with FREE checklist

The Xcel Bronze gymnastics level is the first level in the Xcel program. To compete gymnastics in the Xcel Bronze Division, the gymnast must be able to do routines that meet these requirements, as stated in the Xcel Code of Points. These requirements are paraphrased for easier comprehension; for precise information always refer to the official book published by USA Gymnastics.

The Xcel Bronze division is one level in the Xcel program; here is more information about all the gymnastics levels.

xcel bronze skills checklist 2024

While these are requirements, some gymnasts compete in the Xcel Bronze level without being able to do all the skills listed below. For what requirements gymnasts don’t fulfill, the judges take deductions.

Bronze Vault Requirements

Bronze gymnasts must perform one of the following vaults:

  • Stretch jump onto mat and then kick to handstand and fall to flat back OR
  • Jump to handstand and fall to flat back

Bronze Bars Requirements

Bronze gymnasts must have the following in their bar routine:

  1. A minimum of 4 “A” value skills
  2. A Cast (hips must leave the bar)
  3. A Circling Skill (not the mount or dismount)
  4. A Dismount

An example of a routine that meets all the requirements would be: Jump to Front Support- Cast- Back hip circle- Cast off stand dismount.

Bronze Beam Requirements

Bronze gymnasts must have the following in their beam routine:

  1. Minimum of 1/2 turn on one or two feet
  2. One jump or leap (ex. tuck jump)
  3. One non-flight acro skill (ex. forward roll)
  4. A dismount — not a salto or aerial dismount (ex. straddle jump off the beam)

Bronze Floor Requirements

Bronze gymnasts must have the following in their floor routine:

  1. Minimum of two directly connected acro skills (ex. roundoff – backward roll)
  2. A second pass with one acro skill (ex. cartwheel)
  3. A dance passage with two skills, one of which is a leap with a 60 degree cross or side split — they can be directly or indirectly connected
  4. Minimum of 1/2 turn on one foot

You’re coach decides for you. You’re coach is mainly looking if, you pay attention, work hard, and make corrections.

    • Ali July 30, 2017, 11:09 pm

You may or may not be in the same level. My guess would be you would go in a lower level and they would teach you the stuff you forgot, and then once you got the skills, you could go back to bronze.

Is the xcel bronze level program a lower level of JO? And can you still advance to elite? Is this a competitive team in the hope of advancing to more competitive levels. Just trying to gage where this level goes? Would JO Team be a more competitive level?

    Reply
    • Callia Logan May 20, 2019, 12:04 pm

Bronze is not a lower level for JO. JO stands for Junior Olympics, Xcel and JO are two different programs when it comes to competitions.

What is the age to be able to start xcel, i have a 5 yr old that is in our jr program and she has skills, but they are not moving her up and she is getting bored. She can do a standing back handspring, many leaps, a back hip circle around the bar, my only concern would be balane beam….she has not learned any form of dismounting. Thanks for your time!!

There isn’t an excel program in Canada, so what should i do? It’s so not fair, no one cares about gymnastics in Canada, all they care about is USA gymnastics. I wanted to order gymnastics equipment and they had to ship it from USA, because they don’t have any gymnastics equipment here in Canada ( they have them in gyms only ). I also had to buy my leotard from a strangers basement because they didn’t’t have any leotard stored!
    Sorry for the grammar….

The only things I need are 4 A Value, Whatever those are. I also need a circling skill, then I’m good to go!

    • Alayna February 29, 2020, 11:36 pm

Hi! I’m not sure of any gyms in your area (we are in FL), but I would suggest going to an open gym in your area to wake up those skills and scheduling a try-out with a few local gyms that you like. My daughter was out of the gym for a year (and it showed). She did end up joining Xcel Bronze for this competition season. If you have the skills, coaches should be willing to work with you to be competition-ready.

It basically means you need at least 4 skills on bar (like for instance a pullover back hip circle mill circle and a dismount.)

Don’t worry! I am 11 and I am the youngest and smallest, yet tallest and oldest in my class. I think i should be in silver or at least competing for my roundoff back handspring. Just keep working hard. It only took me a year to get on Xcel and I believe anyone can do it if they work for it!

Is there a deduction if your skills are “too difficult” for your level? And what would be considered “too difficult”? When I competed Bronze I did a RO BHS tumbling pass and a cartwheel swing thru handstand forward roll (basically a cartwheel and a HS forward roll connected). It says you’re supposed to have a pass with 2 connected acro skills, and then another isolated acro skill. I had 2 passes with 2 connected skills. Would that be a deduction (and if so, how much?) Thanks for any help/advice.

Hey! I would reccomend getting a backhandspring, a round off, a handstand on beam, a half turn, a back hip circle, a pullover, a backwalkover on floor, a handstand flat back on vault and a split jump, straight jump and tuck jump. It will be tricky since most people start when they’re very young, but i think you can do it. Have a skill each practice that you want to get that day and try to focus on it. I had practice today and got a backwalkover on beam, a clear hip on bars, a round off double bhs on floor, and im working on back tucks off the beam. (Don’t worry, you dont need these skills, I’m in gold) but yeah. Ur probably 13 by now, but i turned 12 in march so were similar ages i guess. Toodleoo and hope this helps!
