What NOT to Do at Your Gymnastics State Meet

Your state meet is one of the biggest moments of your gymnastics season. It’s your chance to showcase all your hard work and perform at your best. But small mistakes—ones you might not even realize you’re making—can cost you valuable points. In this post, we’ll break down the top mistakes gymnasts make before, during, and after their routines so you can avoid unnecessary deductions and compete with confidence!

BEFORE THE MEET: Set Yourself Up for Success

1. Skipping Mental Prep

If you’re only practicing your routines physically and not mentally visualizing them—you’re missing a key part of preparation. Mental routines reduce nerves, improve consistency, and help ensure you don’t forget your routine! Before your meet, take time to close your eyes and mentally run through each skill, transition, and landing as if you’re on the competition floor.

2. Not Practicing Floor with Music

Running your floor routine without music is like practicing beam without a beam. Timing and expression matter—and judges can tell when you’re not confident with your choreography. If you’re not practicing with music, you risk rushing through movements, missing artistic elements, or being off-tempo, all of which can lead to deductions.

DURING THE MEET: Where the Most Deductions Happen

3. Forgetting Your Choreography

Judges can tell when you blank. Confidence and memory come from repetition.

Pro Tip: When you do a mental routine, it should take the same amount of time as your routine when you compete. This helps train your mind to stay on rhythm and avoid hesitation.

4. Rushing Through Skills or Transitions

Fast doesn’t always mean better. Take your time to show clean, controlled movement. When we step onto the competition floor or beam, the adrenaline kicks in, and we tend to speed up. Take a deep breath, stay calm, and stick to the timing you practiced during your mental routine.

5. Hesitating Before Tumbling or Dismounts

Big pauses hurt your rhythm score. Commit to each skill confidently! Judges want to see fluid movement, not moments of doubt before big elements. If you hesitate, you signal uncertainty, which can impact your execution score.

6. Sloppy Posture Between Skills

Don’t let your body go loose between big elements—judges want to see polish throughout. Each time your posture drops, you could lose a tenth of a point, and those tenths add up! Stay engaged, strong, and intentional throughout your entire routine.

AFTER THE MEET: Learn and Improve, Don’t Overthink

7. Obsessing Over Your Score Right Away

Instead of immediately focusing on your score, reflect on how you felt during your routine. Were you confident? Did you perform your best? The number on the scoreboard doesn’t always reflect your personal growth.

8. Comparing Yourself to Others

Comparison can kill your confidence. Every gymnast is on their own journey—focus on your progress. Instead of measuring yourself against teammates or competitors, ask: Did I improve? Did I accomplish my goals?

9. Ignoring Judge Feedback or Mistakes

Learn from it! If you had a fall or a form issue, take that into practice for the next meet or season. This is where journaling is KEY! Writing down your reflections helps you objectively assess your performance and use it as constructive feedback. Journaling also boosts confidence, allowing you to track progress over time and refine your competition mindset.

Perform with Confidence!

Your state meet isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing off your hard work and performing with confidence! Avoiding these common mistakes will help you feel more prepared, stay focused, and compete at your highest level.
