SkillTrakker's July/August Double Challenge:

Press Handstand & Switch Leap

Join other gymnasts in this 2 Month Long SkillTrakker Challenge!

Starts July 1st!

Why Spend Time this Summer on a Press Handstand & Switch Leap?

A Press Handstand is an ESSENTIAL building block skill.

cast handstand gymnastics

It helps your gymnast learn a cast handstand ("B" skill) on bars, which she will need starting in Level 7.

It also leads to learning "B" and "C" high valued mounts on beam.

Not convinced it's important?

A Press Handstand is one of only 7 Physical Abilities USA Gymnastics looks at in their Talent Opportunity Program, where they identify young gymnasts they predict will excel in the sport.

So obviously, they think it's a pretty important skill!

And, a switch leap is a "B" skill on Floor and a "C" skill on beam. Starting in Level 6 a gymnast needs one "B" skill in each of her routines.

Why not spend your summer learning and improving this high-valued skill you will need?!

You might be thinking, these skills are very advanced. Are they too advanced for my gymnast?

Switch leaps and press handstands are advanced skills. But every gymnast can make progress learning them. All of the drills we do will also help her improve the basic skills- a leap and a handstand.

What Exactly will your gymnast Learn during the challenge?

  • The 4 Different Parts of a Press Handstand, along with drills to help your gymnast learn them. Breaking a press handstand down into its components makes it easier for all levels of gymnasts to learn and improve.
  • Drills to help your gymnast Improve her Form and Control in her Handstand
  • A complex used by Elite Gymnasts that was proven to help Improve the Split in their Leaps
  • 5 combinations your gymnast can practice to help her Leap Higher and Bigger
  • 2 different Leap entries that your gymnast can use when doing regular split leaps or switch leaps that will help her get more Height

Summer is a time for learning new skills but it's also a perfect time have some fun! When you sign up your gymnast for this challenge you'll get a pdf packet filled with crafts you can do at home with her this summer.

But that's not it! Your gymnast will also get a Goal Setting pdf to help her focus on the goals that she can control this upcoming season. With so much uncertainty right now, we want her focusing on the right things so she will stay motivated in gymnastics.

Finally, when you sign up your gymnast for this challenge she will receive a Skills Ladder for both the press handstand and the switch leap to help her focus on the little steps needed. How Much Progress Will My Gymnast Make?

That's a great question and we have a great answer for you.

The amount of progress your gymnast makes during this challenge will depend 100% on how much effort she puts into her daily challenges! A switch leap and press handstand are difficult skills that require a lot of time to master. She might not go from being able to not do a press handstand to then being able to do one completely but she WILL see progress if she follows our drills.

The drills we have created are designed to give your gymnast the most bang for her buck over the 60 days of this Challenge. But if she doesn't do them or only does them halfway, then chances are she won't see much of a difference between her day 1 video and her day 60 video.

However , gymnasts who put in the daily effort and try their hardest can make great progress like our SkillTrakker gymnasts did in our previous Switch Leap/Press Handstand challenge. Check out some of their results below.

These are Morgan's dramatic switch leap results, an Xcel Gold Gymnast, after completing our 60 day Press Handstand/Switch Leap Challenge last summer.

You can see Morgan's results even clearer below in her before/after videos.

Also check out Jordan's press handstand before/after videos below after just 30 days of our challenge. At the time she had just gotten on to the Level 4 team. Here are some words she had to say about her progress:

These are Kyriana's, an Xcel Gold gymnast, switch leap results after completing our challenge. You can see how much progress she made too during this challenge.

You Mentioned Earning Points for Prizes. Tell Me More.

We love prizes here at SkillTrakker! So for every challenge that we run, gymnasts earn points that they can redeem for prizes in our SkillTrakker Prize Store. If a gymnast completes every single daily and monthly challenge for both months of this challenge, she will earn bonus points that get added to her point total. These points are enough for her to redeem her points for a small prize after the challenge is over.

All unused points get carried over from month to month and as long as your gymnast is a current SkillTrakker member, she can use those points to get prizes from the SkillTrakker store at any time. So not only will she see results in her gymnastics, she'll also get the chance to earn cool prizes! It's a win-win.

More Questions? We've Got Answers

My gymnast just went back to the gym. I'm worried she won't have the time to complete this challenge?

We know how unpredictable summers can be which is why we created a challenge that can be done in a short amount of time each day. Your gymnast can do the exercises in the morning before she goes out for the day or even right before bed. These exercises were designed to be focused and effective so it doesn't take much time each day to see results. Plus, even though your gymnast is back in the gym, there are still so many fundamentals that she can work on at home. Summer is the time to hone in on these fundamentals.

My daughter's coach doesn't want her practicing at home because s/he's worried I'll pick up bad habits.

We understand why your gymnast's coach wouldn't want her to develop any bad habits and we don't want her to either. Luckily the exercises she's going to do during this Press Handstand & Switch Leap challenge are all ones that will benefit her. We provide you with videos so you can see the proper way to do the drills and because press handstands and switch leaps mostly require strength and flexibility, rather than technique, we are certain she'll get more good out of this challenge rather than pick up bad habits. In fact, any work your gymnast does on her leaps and handstands will be beneficial to her.

What exactly IS SkillTrakker? I can't really tell.

First and foremost, SkillTrakker is an online community of other gymnasts who are working on mastering different gymnastics skills. In SkillTrakker your gymnast can keep track of the different skills you're learning on each event and watch the progress she's making. She can even download certificates as she masters each skill! She will earn points for completing daily challenges and with her points she can redeem for prizes in the SkillTrakker Store. In the daily feed your gymnast can see what other gymnasts are learning and cheer them on through comments and high fives. Basically, SkillTrakker is a really cool way for your gymnast to practice her gymnastics skills while staying motivated and belonging to a community of other cool gymnasts like herself!

How long is this challenge?

This challenge lasts 2 months. It starts on Wednesday, July 1st and ends on Monday, August 31st.

Does it cost money to join SkillTrakker's Double SkillChallenge?

Yes, in order to participate in the SkillTrakker Challenge you must be signed up for SkillTrakker which costs $7 for each month. At only $7 per month ($14 for the two month challenge), this is an incredible deal!! Your gymnast will not only get daily challenges, community, and accountability, but she'll also earn points to redeem for prizes PLUS she'll improve on her press handstand and switch leap! In fact, the cost of a typical recreational gymnastics class in the U.S. averages about $20/hr. The cost for private gymnastics lessons is at least double that. With SkillTrakker your gymnast will get skill-specific exercises to complete at home, in addition to a tracking tool and an entire gymnastics community, for less than 25 cents per day!!! Oh, and don't forget about the extra points your gymnast can earn for completing all of the daily challenges for the duration of the challenge.

What happens after the challenge is over?

After the challenge is over you can choose to keep your gymnast in SkillTrakker monthly (for $7/month) to see even better results. Every month we offer a new challenge to increase your gymnast's skill mastery of a variety of skills. The Leaderboard gets cleared at the beginning of every month and your gymnast will continue to earn points towards prizes in the SkillTrakker store. Most gymnasts find that their skills really see improvement after three to six months of consistent effort with SkillTrakker.
