We break down 5 different beam routines and show you the places where judges most likely took deductions.

Given the complexity of gymnastics scoring, it’s not uncommon for gymnasts to receive scores that confuse them. Often we hear from our readers that they are perplexed by a score they received and need help understanding where they got deductions.

To help you, we took 5 different beam routines from our readers and broke them down to show you the places where judges most likely took deductions.

While your routine might not be exactly the same as these, you can get a feel for what the judges are looking for as they watch your routine. In the following videos you’ll see the common places gymnasts get deductions such as from form errors, as well as the not as understood deductions such as rhythm pauses and footwork.

Xcel Silver Beam Routine by Kathryn

Kathryn shows us how cleaning up form errors and tightening up her body position after her full turn can help her score.

Xcel Gold Beam Routine by Skye

In this routine we can see how cleaning up bobbles can help Skye score higher on her routine.

Xcel Platinum Beam Routine by Kyriana

From Kyriana’s routine we can see how small form errors like bent legs and flexed feet can add up and bring a score down.

Level 6 Beam Routine by Claire

Claire shows us how pauses before elements can add up to bigger deductions.

Level 6 Beam Routine by Alexis

Alexis demonstrates beautiful artistry and lines in her beam routine and starts off with a unique mount. We can see how she almost loses .5 for a long pause in her connection.
