5 Gymnastics Challenges you can try at home!

We’ve got 5 gymnastics challenges for you to try at home and we think you’re really going to like them.

Watch the video below and see if you can do all 5 of them.

Tag us on instagram (@gymnasticshq) when you try them so we can cheer you on!

The 5 Challenges are:

  1. Relevé Walk With Dominos – Can you walk the length of a balance beam without knocking over any of your dominos? You can use Jenga blocks or toilet paper instead of dominos. If you use toilet paper, try not to touch the toilet paper with your heels as you walk in relevé. The idea is to keep your heels lifted as high as possible.
  2. Handstand With Oven Mitts – Can you do a few handstands in a row without dropping the oven mitts? If so, how many can you do? Let us know! The oven mitts go in between your ears and your shoulders.
  3. Turn Combo Balance – Can you do a pivot turn-pivot turn-scale while balancing a roll of toilet paper on your head? If that’s too easy, try making up your own turn combo and see if you can keep the toilet paper roll on your head the entire time? Remember to keep your head straight and chest lifted. This will help you with your posture.
  4. Leap The Creek – Can you leap over two jump ropes that are spread far enough to equal at least 1/2 of your height in distance? Can you leap over ropes that are even further apart? How far apart can you go? Remember your good form.
  5. Flexibility Challenge – Can you lay down on your tummy with your hands behind your back and circle your legs all the way around (through center split) and then come up to standing without using your arms? This is a hard one! Keep trying if you can’t get this one because it gets easier with practice.

Hi, this page is really good. I’m 12 and I’m not flexible at all, I do not do gymnastics but I would love to learn a few of the basic things like a handstand, cartwheel etc. so that I have something that I can do while we are in lockdown and so I can have fun with my friends when we are back to normal. Please could you help me, what is a good place to start?
    Thanks

Hi I’m kyeleigh and I’m 13 and I would just start by doing some simple stretches each day and practice trying to kick into a handstand against the wall.

Hi Kyeleigh, you said about stretching, do u think I could get the splits B4 the end of lockdown? or is that not really possible??? Also, how long should I be able to hold a handstand against the wall (secs) and when should I start to learn without the wall?
      Thanks

Hi Sophie, I have been a competitive gymnast for many years and to answer your question, YES! You can absolutely learn splits before the end of lockdown. Just practice for even just 5 mins every day and push yourself as far down as you can go. For a handstand, 18 seconds is great! i recommend doing a handstand with your hands about 20cm from the wall and trying to take your feet off the wall and hold it but the wall is there so you don’t go over. Do this until you feel you have the confidence and shoulder/core strength to try without the wall.

I think you could totally get your splits…I do competitive gymnastics and I’ve found if you practice a little every day, say as doing 1 minute in your split, you can get to your goal really fast.

hey! If you want to learn how to do a handstand like some of the other comments said try against a wall and after you can do it for about 20 secs ( its really good to have upper arm strength when you are doing a handstand bc you have to learn how to hold your body weight) and after that when your attempting without a wall I recommend you keep your fingers spread out, ( not to much) and grip the ground so you can hold yourself and point your toes, also you should start with one leg and your opposite leg should kick up first, then your other leg. Hope I helped! I hope you get your handstand very soon! Also If this doesn’t help, you can find some tutorials where you can get a visual.

a good place to start is flexibility go on youtube and find some videos the next step after that would be a bridge again youtube or maybe even here has many tutorials then I would work on your handstand which you can do up against a wall and then your cartwheel. I would start with those first I am sure gymnastics hq has tons of tutorials and so does youtube. although whether you get them or not during your other skills I would work on your splits every moment you can

Sophia you should start learning a handstand without the wall once you feel confident in your handstand making sure you keep good form. Also I am sure you could get your splits before lockdown ends the trick is find a time once ever other day and go into the splits as far as you can an hold it for 30 secs the next day do the same thing but add 5 more seconds keep doing it adding 5 more seconds every time and you should get the splits. Once you get your splits I would suggest stretching with them every once in a while or else you will lose them.
