Did you know that you should work on basic skills at every level of gymnastics?

Often times, the basics get overlooked in practice. There just isn't enough time or focus on the basics which ironically can help you improve more than practicing anything else.

In the fall/winter, coaches typically focus on meet prep - getting routines learned and perfected. Then during meet season, it's a lot of the same - where to improve from meet to meet and mastering the skills in your routine. In the off season, we are focused on upgrades for the following season.

But the thing is...while coaches want their gymnasts to have great form, they don't spend a lot of time working on it in practice with the basics. It's not their fault. There are only a certain number of hours of training per week and coaches need to teach their gymnasts the required gymnastics skills and perfecting their routines in that time frame. 

So we came up with a brilliant idea. Why not put together a 30 day SkillTrakker month that focuses on the BASICS. We've heard from many of you how much you need to work on your form and the basics. So we designed a month around it and we're excited to share it with you!

So, How Will We Get Back to the Basics?

We will work to:

  • Make a TIGHTLY SQUEEZED body position a habit
  • Practice TIGHT KNEES so they becomes second nature
  • IMPROVE TOE POINT- point with your whole foot not just your toes
  • Learn how to grow tall- or as some coaches say it- GET YOUR RIBS IN

And we will practice skills like:

  • Handstands
  • Turns
  • Leaps
  • Jumps
  • And More!

STEP 1: You'll Sign up for SkillTrakker

How much progress in my form will I see?

That's a great question and we have a great answer for you. 

The amount of progress you make on your form will depend 100% on how much effort you put into your daily assignments! These drills are designed to give you the most bang for your buck over the next 30 days. But if you don't do them or only do them halfway, then chances are you won't see much of a difference between day 1 and day 30.

BUT...if you put in the daily effort and try your hardest, you can make great progess! 


I train in the gym a lot of hours during the week and I'm worried I won't have the time to complete the daily assignments?

We know how much you train which is why we created assignments/stretches that can be done in a short amount of time each day. You can do the exercises in the morning before you go to school or even right before bed. These exercises were designed to be focused and effective so it doesn't take much time each day to see results. PLUS, stretching at home is something you should be doing anyway!


Is this a LIVE challenge?

Yes! You'll be going through the assignments daily with the other participants of the challenge. You'll all start and end at the same time so you'll be able to track your progress and see where you stand on the Leaderboard. It's a great way to stay motivated and to have a little friendly competition with other gymnasts working on the same goal as you.


What exactly IS SkillTrakker? I can't really tell. 

First and foremost, SkillTrakker is an online community of other gymnasts who are working on mastering different gymnastics skills. In SkillTrakker you can keep track of the different skills you're learning on each event and watch the progess you're making. You can even download certificates as you master each skill! You earn points for completing daily challenges and with your points you can win prizes in the SkillTrakker Store. In the daily feed you can see what other gymnasts are learning and cheer them on through comments and high fives. Basically, SkillTrakker is a really cool way to practice your gymnastics skills while staying motivated and belonging to a community of other cool gymnasts like yourself!

How long is this SkillTrakker theme month?

The Back to the Basics month lasts 30 days. It starts on Thursday, June 1st and ends on Friday, June 30th.


Does it cost money to join the Back to the Basics Challenge?

Yes, in order to participate in the SkillTrakker Challenge you must be signed up for SkillTrakker which costs $7 for the month. At only $7, this is an incredible deal!! You'll not only get daily assignments, community, and accountability, but you'll also improve your confidence and flexibility! In fact, the cost of a typical recreational gymnastics class in the U.S. averages about $20/hr. The cost for private gymnastics lessons is at least double that. With SkillTrakker you get confidence exercises and stretches to complete at home, in addition to a tracking tool and an entire gymnastics community, for less than 25 cents per day!!! 


What happens after the SkillTrakker Challenge is over?

After the SkillTrakker challenge is over you can continue to participate in SkillTrakker monthly (for $7/month) to see even better results. In May we will be offering a skill-specific challenge (stay tuned for what skill we'll be doing). In the alternate months we'll be doing other Themed Months. The Leaderboard gets cleared at the beginning of every month and you'll earn points towards prizes in the SkillTrakker store. Most challengers find that their skills really see improvement after three to six months of consistent effort with SkillTrakker.
