When it comes to competing on the uneven bars, every move counts. Gymnastics judges carefully evaluate each routine, looking for specific elements that separate a strong performance from a standout one. Olympic champion Shannon Miller once said, “Gymnastics teaches us balance, strength, and how to reach for the very best in ourselves.” Nowhere is this more evident than in bar routines, where precision and technique are key.
In this article, we’ll dive into the five critical things judges look for when scoring on the bars. From perfect handstands to smooth transitions, these insights will help you refine your performance and maximize your score. Whether you’re new to competing or aiming to fine-tune your routine, understanding what judges expect will give you a competitive edge.
If you’re a gymnast (or a parent of a gymnast), we are sure you’ve wondered what you could to on your bars routine that will stand out with the judges to improve your score. Take these tips from the youngest judge in North Carolina, at age 16…me!
What Gymnastics Judges Look for on Bars
Do you have all the skills required at your Gymnastics level
Judges evaluate your bar routine to make sure that you have all of the skills required for your level. You can check out our website to see all of the required skills for each level, to make sure that you have all of the skills and elements required for you specifically.
Body Position in Casts
Judges evaluate your body position in each of your casts on bars. You need to make sure that your body position is nice, tight and straight.
Cast Angle for Level
Each gymnastics level has a different cast angle requirement so you need to make sure that you’re achieving your required angle for your level at least once in your routine.
Extra Casts
Judges look to make sure you don’t have any extra casts in your bar routine. You will receive a deduction for each extra cast in your bar routine.
Rhythm
Judges evaluate the rhythm of your bar routine. They want to see a consistent flow in your bar routine – a smooth rhythm without pauses will ensure a higher score.
