Watch a Gymnastics Movie – Need something to do when you’re all out of ideas? Well, we’d rather you get outside or practice the dance part of your routines, but a little motivational movie is a nice change of pace too. We recommend Full Out, based on Arianna Berlin’s life story, as a first choice for some great motivation. The Gabby Douglas Story and The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar are great too. Just remember to check the rating. Stick It is PG-13 and is not appropriate for all audiences.

SkillTrakker Challenge – If your gym is closed for a few weeks or you just need something extra to do while you’re home, check out our SkillTrakker Community. It’s an online community of over 1300 gymnasts who work on daily and monthly gymnastics challenges at home and earn points for each challenge. Themes change every month.

Is there a way I can learn to do a backhandspring at home in 30 days. I have a really strong back walkover and I was so close to getting my backhandspring but then my gym closed

First, make sure your shoulders are very strong by doing lots of handstands, walking on hands, popping off hands, and handstand snap downs. Then, make sure your legs are very strong by jumping backward from the floor onto a crash mat or mattress on the floor and landing in a hollow position on your back, as far from your starting point as possible. If you have a foam barrel that is at least waist height when it is on its side, set it immediately behind you at one end of a gymnastics mat. Jump backward across the barrel, reaching hard, with taught arms, for the mat. The barrel will catch your back as you jump backward, taking some of the impact off your arms. After social distancing is no longer required, a 16+ year old competitive gymnast or former competitive gymnast in your area might be willing to spot you a few times if you demonstrate the necessary strength in your handstand and backward jumping drills. He/she will support your back and shoulder to make sure your arms don’t collapse on impact. If you already have the necessary strength, you will learn the coordination and timing to do a back handspring on your own fairly quickly.

I learned to do my back handspring at my gym but then it closed and I lost it during social distancing. I recommend either waiting so you dont get hurt, getting spotted from parents, or doing it on a mattress and panel mat on the floor. That is how i relearned mine. Now at the age of 9 i am doing round-off back handsprings all around my house!! Hope this helps!
